The reasons are technically called subdivision and fragmentation. These two terms can be easily explained by an example. If I have five sons (Let us forget for a while about equal rights for daughters too in this example) and ten acres of arable land, when I equally divide the ten acres among them each of them gets 2 acres each. This is subdivision. If that 2 acres of land isn’t going to be single block of 2 acres but 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 0.3 and 0.2 acres of 5 unconnected pieces of land, it is called fragmentation. In India, fragmented landed properties are the rule because of the uniqueness in inheritance of properties to our offspring!
